BOOkNOOK REveals promising covid distance learning results
A major concern for both educators and parents is the “COVID slide,” the expected two to four months of learning loss as a result of coronavirus school closures. BookNook, a software platform focused on literacy and foundational reading skills for students in grades K-5, transitioned 40% of their students to rigorous online instruction guided by live instructors.
A 2020 analysis of these BookNook students’ reading skill growth indicated that 90% of students were able to maintain their reading level and 57% advanced their reading level. This data reveals BookNook students are able to progress at a pace consistent with in-person learning - a promising discovery as the pandemic’s timeline continues to remain unknown.
A 2022 study by the Consortium for Policy Research in Education based at Columbia University found “third to fifth grade students with relatively higher levels of BookNook usage experienced stronger literacy development, compared to both non-BookNook students and low-usage BookNook participants,” resulting in 13.3 points higher scores on an evaluation test– more than twice as many points when compared with a competitor’s teaching aid.
